Memorial; Day Fun
At first, these two thoughts seem incongruous and complete opposite. How can “fun” be reasonably linked to the word “memorial?” It also struck me funny and odd until I began tto think about it. The reason there is a holiday at all is because there were men and women who fought and died to establish the freedoms that the United States of America and to maintain those freedoms in the face of tyranny and even a Civil War.
Who can look back at our history and not see the shining path that these brave men and women have tried to lay out? There are some who have tried to confuse and divert these people from that path. These visionaries have even faced dangers and death in foreign counties to stop the advance of oppression and cruelty. Some of their bodies remain to this day on those foreign shores, in pockmarked battlefields, and sweltering jungles.
How easy it is to lessen and even forget the sacrifice that these people have made when we focus on the “long weekend” and make the day all about fun and picnics. If these warriors didn't fight for our freedom, there would not be the holiday and there might be misery and chains instead.
I can connect the two by thanking God for those people and then enjoy time with my family with a time of reconnecting and reestablishing the bonds of love and not exaggerating fun.” We must never forget those men and women who sacrificially gave so I can enjoy time with my family, enjoying freedoms that the rest of the world envies. I hope your Memorial Day was well spent.
